Lesson learned:

Do not parse text file that will have "ID" as the first 2 characters in your output. Excel will throw this error if you import the text file containing it...

"SYLK: File format is not valid" error message when you open file

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you open a text file or CSV file and the first two characters of the file are the uppercase letters "I" and "D". For example, the text file may contain the following text:

   ID, STATUS
123, open
456, closed

Note This problem does not occur if the first two letters are lowercase "i" and "d".

WORKAROUND

To open your file in Excel, open the file in a text editor, and then insert an apostrophe at the beginning of the first line of text.

My Spaghetti

This recipe is a fusion of east and west. It uses fresh ingredients available in your ref, no canned or bottled spagehtti sauce, plus tuyo in oil flakes for a Pinoy hint.

Ingridients

angel hair spaghetti noodles
2 medium red tomatoes
1 red onion bulb
2 tablespoon ground garlic

My Adobo

This is pretty simple. American chicken is "malansa." I just boiled the chicken and throw all the broth away. I boiled it again with a little amount of fresh water, 3 tablespoon of kikkoman soy sauce, 3 tablespoon of vinegar, 2 heaping tablespoon of ground garlic, 1 teaspoon ground red pepper and dash of ground pepper. I cooled it down for few hours and before dinner I broiled it for 10 minutes in oven. Boiled asparagus is later added at the serving plates to provide fiber.

I remember I bought catfish fillet a month ago and it is still in freezer. I missed pesa so I passed by publix supermarket and bought a few strands of string beans. A black man told me that I could get a pre-packed 1-lb of string bean and I told him I only need a few strands because I will be cooking for myself. I also got ginger the important spice for pesa. I know I have potatoes, asparagus, green and bulb onions and dried red pepper so I'm all set. Voila I now have my dinner, pesang hito and since im lazy to cook rice so i boiled two corn cab and got a cup of mixed fruit and yogurt for my desert. As usual I always have my Tropicana sugar free juice.

for months i have been looking for this cynthia alexnder's album. last week i tried my luck at mag:net and 70's bistro and cynthia seems too elusive-- her album is sold out as soon as it hit the record stand.

until finally last night, after meeting some friends at starbucks intramuros, i decided to try my luck again and go to 70's bistro. but a long the way i told my buddy that we will go to conspiracy bar in visayas avenue instead. the bar is known for non-mainstream pinoy artists' cooperative and its habitue for the non-conformists. then i saw a copy of rippingyarn in the display cabinet but it was locked and unattended. the guard said manang, the store keeper has not been reporting since the other day. argh... very elusive album indeed!

until we saw someone leaving the bar and to our surprise its cynthia alexnder, the artist herself and we takled with her where can we get her album. cynthia said it was out of stock that even tower records is bugging her for copies and customers keep on asking for it. she added that the one on display is a last copy...argh#*** but then she still have 3 copies left at her house. so we beg her to take her home and if we could get the 2 of the 3 copies she has. she said ok but told us she dont go with strangers. hehehehe this remind me of 15 years ago--anyway later. we told her that we will hail a cab for her and follow the taxi wherever she lives. she agreed and then we went to her place somewhere near quezon avenue.

when were at her place i told her im getting the 2 copies she nicely offered a P100 discount per cd--great. she introduced us to her pet cock, her shooting star plant, her vines and her sitar guitar lying at the garage but inside nicely packed plywood box. we also told her we are from bulacan (not really because im from valenzuela) and just drove this far just to get her album.

then i requested if she could sign the two albums and she gamely did, 1 cd is with alibata and the other one a note how rare to find this album is. i reminded her 15 years ago, she approaced me at red rocks and requested if i could take her in a taxi to her home. i said yes and took her to a project where she lived before. that reminds her of days when she was still a bassist for the band called hayp.

before we left we ask for celfone number and if we could invite her for a poetry reading and concert in valenzuela. she said yes and gave us her number. now we have an activity look out for, a show in our museo or produce a show to a local bar where we hang out. a night of good music and poetry is offing our mind.

btw im going to give the other album to her--hopes she likes it.

Whoa! 2.6.8.x kernel rocks! superb as i can now mount my digital camera and download my pics via usb. I can use Gimp for photo manipulation and gThumb as my viewer.

Not only my camera by my thumb drive too (thanks mench). The moment a USB thumb drive (including a digital camera) is plugged in, hotplug detects it, udev assigns it a device node, and with a message passed on via D-BUS to HAL, GNOME detects it and automatically mounts it as the user currently logged in. An icon for the drive is placed on the desktop (unless it is a digital camera, which is automatically mounted but behaves differently). A user can now access her files just by double-clicking on the icon placed on her desktop â?? when done simply closing the open window and ejecting the device is all that's required.

Such automated operation also extends to digital cameras, mine is E510 Finepix from Fujifilm (plug in your camera and if it detects new photos it offers to sync them), data and audio CDs, and portable MP3 devices like the popular iPod. The new File Alteration Monitor, gamin, provides notification to the GUI tools within the system about the file system when changes such as creation, modification, or removal occurs. Gamin prevents unnecessary â??lockingâ?? of devices, even after they're used â?? a common problem that plagued older releases of Fedora.

I did not flex my muscle today but rather i spent my time to flex my rusty mind to optimize my Fedora Core 3 installation.

After doing a lot of RTFM and Googling, I finally figured out how to disable the bundled gnujava that is in default with Fedora and Redhat. This by simply removing java, javac and jar at /usr/bin and make a symlink of java from /usr/java/xxxx/xxx which is the default installation directory of java sdk from Sun.

Next problem i need to solve is how can i make this desktop play mp3. A plugin is downloadable at this page and it is solve. Now I can play Theolonius Monks and emos i got from limewire.

So what are the other things i need to do?

1. Install Sylpheed Claws, my favorite mua to download gmail. I recently gave up some of my pop account that have become a source of trouble in my winsuck box.
2. Play dvd, vcd, mpeg and avi. No need to reboot just to watch CSI5 and CSI New York. Hey i need to install BitTorrent too!
3. Install Eclipse and go back in renewing java knowledge.
4. More administrative skills in *nix.
5. Learn emacs.

congratulations to my good friend jerry gracio!

He wrote the award winning film, santa santita, that will finally hit the screen on November 2004. Jerry also wrote classic pinoy erotic films like talong, itlog and other pinakbet veggies titled movies that made diana zubiri a sex pot.

From the film press realease excerpt:

"That was precisely what attracted filmmaker Laurice Guillen to the award-winning script of Jerry Gracio, who won first prize in the scriptwriting contest of the Film Development Council of the Philippines a year before the victory of what would turn out to be the widely acclaimed "Magnifico."

"Under the main narrative, there was another spiritual story that was unfolding," says Laurice. "I wanted to focus on that. The challenge was in showing these two paths merging. All the characters in this movie underwent a journey. They all realize that all of us in this world are sinners. But what is important is how you struggle to be good. As they say, 'The road to hell is wide and paved, but the road to heaven is narrow and hard.' "

Thanks to Romy Buen I have now 8 cds of DIY circa late 70s and early 80s. Cool collection courtesy of tower records recto, an alternative to tower records according to romy. He still owe me copies of old school pinoy punk collection which he ripped from tapes to cd.

Way back in the late 80's, romy is one of the cartoonist and layout artist of Jingle Magazine together with the great late dodong viray, Rox Lee (nuts & bolt fame), Poch Concepcion (where is he now?) etc. His name was vanadalized all over Red Rocks--Who's F*** is Romy Buen! Red Rock incidentally was the alternative music home in the late 80s where band like CocoJam, Jerks, Joey Ayala and other used to play. Eraserheads, Color it Red, Intovoys, etc honed their skill here before lounging to the mainstream.

The Debian-based Ubuntu Linux was unveiled today and a preview release is available for download. Ubuntu uses Gnome 2.8, kernel 2.6.8.1, OOo 1.1.2 and comes with a text-based, but dead-easy, installation procedure. Ubuntu has disabled the root user (sudo is used, same way as OSX does it) and it endorses the "less is more" philosophy.

I miss my desktop more than anything else! I screwed up my dropline and has to tweak my slack box.

My priority for this weekend--upgrade the kernel to 2.6.8 as required by gnome2.8 which dropline uses. Or maybe Ill upgrade to Slackware 10.0 but just thesame, it needs kernel update.

Looks like no weekend for me dude ;(

And of course the Todos Los Santos the Philippnes' carnival festival to celebrate the day for the deads.

Looks like dropline is still down! argh... Last Sun I upgraded my dropline not knowing that this latest is designed for 2.6.x kernel and my box still uses the vanilla 2.4.22 that comes with 9.1. Too late when I rtfm at the site late Sunday (July 9) and come Monday till now (July 13) dropline.net is no where to be found.

I just downloaded and installed gmail notifier for windows. Kewl app as I am now using my gmail addie as my default e-mail addie. Of course it will be more useful for me and other *nix user if same app will be ported for our favorite OS.

yes youre right its faster to install and in fact i find with superb ease to install Red Hat than win2k or win98. I just browsed the the Red Hat Advanced Server Edition which has optimized the kernel for specific server purposes.

quite interesting and im very much interested in promoting it, probably a venture i would proposed with buddy. the one thing i will not bite with red hat is their cert program, something that sucks compared to Sun or any other non-ms cert progtram. of course ms is always non-negotiable. I would recommend LPI cert for linux as it is vendor and anal neutral.

I went to the opening of Conversations, a painting exhibit curated by Roberto Chabet at the Art Walk. This is a once a year exhibition by Finale, a leading gallery that show casing post-modernism works. It is a reunion of sort for most of artist were once under the helm of Mr. Chabet at UP Fine Arts.

I saw Romeo Lee who was mislabelled as the ukay-ukay king. He doesn't have any work this year, but last year he had the whole wall of the rear room facing EDSA with his work work mostly about himself. As usual Gerry Tan, Nilo Ilarde, Juan Alcazaren and Bubbles De Leon are there with works that are truly imaginative, product of beautiful minds.

Francine Medina handed me a copy of Flip, a magazine which she edited with Jessica Zafra, the official magazine for the Filipinos' agenda for world domination as envisioned by Zafra herself. Its the magazine first issue so I have a collectors item at hand and I hope I can put this on the bidding block in the future, once its agenda is done.

I hate the tech columnist for declaring Mac as the computer for world denomination. He boasted that Flip office is an oasis in the dessert of Mac. His partly right, the magazine has very good layout and to which he failed to thanks the Pinoy artists who did well with their job while much praise were given to Steve Jobs. See, how could we dominate the world with such thinking, maybe Jessica should rethink with her position for this guy.

Well Mac is pretty damn good computer but definitely it will not survive the riguer of the long protracted struggle for world denomination. We will not win this war with an oozing cute pod that geekless can work at ease. This is a serious breach of security and a 3 year old clown of the geekette sachac is enough to hack it. Linux is still the best OS for world denomination, no cute pod needed, no less imaginative GUI needed and simple Intel architecture to work with.

MacOS X is pretty damn good thing but if only they will open its source I'm quite sure gnu cc can compile it and port it to simple Intel architecture. Well X will be a debutant in a few years and the graphics engine of MacOSX is really the future. I hope GNUStep will be a realization soon, but heck my Linux is pretty rock solid running on less annoying X, and infact MacOS is pretty well emulated in my KDE desktop.

Yes I'm a great Apple fan too, got a first taste of Apple in the early 80s, running on 8k, without fdd, hdd and only cassette tape to save my data. But its pretty good, a multi-media machine already, it can play the Gettysburg Address with Abe Lincon voice and too powerful for pacman and donkey dong. No BSOD either.
